Invisible Protection against Stains and Etching

Marble Sealing FAQ

  1. Why does marble need to be sealed?
Marble is a porous stone, which means it can absorb liquids and become stained. Sealing helps create a protective barrier to reduce the risk of stains and other surface damage. However, sealing does not stop etching caused by acidic substances.
  2. How often should marble countertops be sealed?
For areas exposed to water, such as kitchen countertops and bathrooms, sealing should be done yearly. Other areas may require sealing every 1-3 years depending on use and the type of sealer applied. Regular testing with water drops can help determine when resealing is needed.
  3. What is the difference between a penetrating sealer and an anti-etch sealer?
A penetrating sealer absorbs into the stone to help resist stains but offers minimal protection against etching from acids. An anti-etch sealer forms a protective surface layer that prevents damage from acidic substances like lemon juice and vinegar.
  4. Will sealing marble change its appearance?
Penetrating sealers do not alter the stone’s appearance. However, some anti-etch coatings or film protectors might add a slight sheen to the surface.
  5. Does sealing marble make it stain-proof?
No, sealing makes marble more stain-resistant but does not make it completely stain-proof. Spills should still be cleaned up quickly to prevent damage. Sealing does not stop etching; acids can still cause surface damage if not properly protected with an anti-etch coating.
  6. Can I seal marble myself, or should I hire a professional?
DIY kits are suitable only for applying penetrating sealers. Anti-etch coatings and film protection require application by trained professionals to ensure proper adhesion, effectiveness, and durability.
  7. What causes marble to etch, and how can sealing help?
Etching occurs when acidic substances like wine or citrus juice react with marble’s calcium carbonate, creating dull spots. Anti-etch sealers create a protective layer on the surface, preventing acids from coming into direct contact with the stone.
  8. Is film protection better than a penetrating sealer?
Yes, film protection and anti-etch coatings are hands down better than standard or penetrating sealers for protection against etching and stains. They provide superior surface-level defense and long-term durability.
  9. How can I tell if my marble needs to be resealed?
Perform a simple water test: place a few drops of water on the surface and wait 15 minutes. If the water darkens the marble, it’s time to reseal.
  10. What areas of the home benefit most from marble sealing?
Kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, and marble floors in high-traffic areas benefit most from sealing due to frequent exposure to water, oils, and acidic substances.
